Over the past year, racism has been front and centre in the news. Many people are expressing shock and outrage regarding incidents of racism and hate right here in Canada. People are grappling with terms such as privilege, unconscious bias, micro-aggressions and systemic racism, wondering where to ask their questions and what to say and do. At the same time, while we know that people who experience racism can be traumatized by the inaction of bystanders, most people freeze up when they witness incidents of racism, largely due to a lack of skills. Organizations and individuals are desirous of creating safer communities for all.

For decades, child welfare authorities have been removing Native American children from their homes to save them from being Indian. In Maine, the first official 'truth and reconciliation commission' in the United States begins a historic investigation. 'Upstander' is a 360 animated experience about bullying, and how we can make a difference if we step in. It was created in partnership with the Oculus VR for Good Program and youth charity The Diana Award. The experience uses scale, embodiment, and space to push the boundaries of the medium.

This workshop is not a traditional webinar but a live virtual training! These two 3 hour virtual sessions will be highly interactive where participants engage with each other in discussions, case studies and skill development in both small breakout groups as well as in the main classroom. You will be listening to the facilitator and you will communicate with the facilitator and other participants using chat. You will not be seen and only heard if you ask questions via audio rather than chat.

Workshop Objectives will include:

  • Where did the term Race originate?
  • Agreements for Creating a Safe Space for Training;
  • Identifying the Fears in Addressing Race;
  • Key Terminology;
    • History of Racism and Colonialism in Canada;
    • Understanding Social Identity and Unconscious Bias – How to reduce bias in hiring;
    • The Role of Privilege, Power & Stereotypes;
    • Micro-Aggressions: How do we knowingly or unknowingly contribute to the experience of racism;
    • Deconstructing Racism: Systemic, Institutional, Interpersonal, Internalized.

As we continue using online tools for communication, Brave cohort has been discussing how we can be an “upstander” online. This word “upstander” came up in our first discussions of our community covenant. This was our brainstorming from that discussion.

We referred to this chart in a recent meeting and the students started reframing their thinking to transfer these ideas to our current learning community online. One student shared her thinking:

Upstander

“Upstander is someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. When an upstander sees or hears about someone being bullied they speak up. Being an upstander is being a hero or a leader.”

The general consensus of the community was that now more than ever we needed to work really hard to mind our words and actions.

We used this chart as a reminder of the difference between rude, mean and bullying.

We discussed that because we are online and “behind screens” so to speak, we cannot use nonverbal communication cues to make sure we are understanding how someone is feeling and how to interpret their words. We used the word “whatever” as an example. What tone you use when you say it aloud and what facial expression or body movements you use (eye roll) tells the receiver of this word what you are really saying. However, when you are just typing the word “whatever” in a chat, it has to be interpreted by the context. It can feel rude or mean. Mp3 sound cutter online free. After this discussion, the Brave cohort community committed to be mindful of their words and actions, whether they are saying them or typing them, so that everyone is encouraged and supported. They covenanted to being upstanders for each other.
